As of last week, Georgia officials say that there are now 1,309 people in the state that are registered to use medical marijuana. The first Georgia medical marijuana card was issued in July 2015. Since then, the patient base has grown surprisingly slow.

Statewide, 311 doctors are available that will certify patients to use medical marijuana, according to Online Athens. More than half of the registered patients use medical marijuana for seizure disorders. Further data shows that 1 in 4 patients is a minor. Another 33 percent are over age 50.

It is legal to use and possess medical marijuana oil in Georgia, but it’s not legal to produce, sell or bring across state lines. So, even those that have medical marijuana cards are legally using their medicine, they still have to obtain it illegally. Georgia is working to fix this issue.

Patients with medical marijuana cards and/or caregivers are permitted to possess up to 20 fluid ounces of marijuana oil with low concentrations of THC.

A referendum is planned by Representative Allen Peake to discuss in-state cultivation. He also wants to expand the list of qualifying conditions.
