Luxembourg Set to Be First European Country to Legalize Marijuana

Luxembourg Marijuana

Luxembourg Health Minister Etienne Schneider has confirmed that the country intends to be the first country in Europe to fully legalize marijuana. The legal age requirement to purchase and use marijuana is expected to be 18.

Draft legislation is in the works and is expected to be revealed later in 2019, according to The Guardian. Within the legislation will be a list of the types of marijuana products that will be permitted.

“This drug policy we had over the last 50 years did not work,” Schneider said “Forbidding everything made it just more interesting to young people … I’m hoping all of us will get a more open-minded attitude toward drugs.”

Schneider wants to see other European countries follow Luxembourg’s lead by reforming marijuana laws.

Minors in Luxembourg would not receive criminal punishment for possessing 5 grams or less of marijuana. Home cultivation would not be allowed.

Medical marijuana is legal in Luxembourg and possessing small amounts of marijuana is already decriminalized. But lawmakers appear ready to take the next step by fully legalizing marijuana.
