Expansion of Georgia’s Medical Marijuana Program Advances

Georgia Marijuana Open

House Bill 65 (HB 65) seeks to double the number of qualifying conditions for Georgia’s medical marijuana program. The bill, sponsored by Representative Allen Peake, has moved one step closer to approval. Friday, March 3 is the deadline for the bill’s passage.

HB 65 would allow out-of-state patients with medical marijuana cards to possess low-THC marijuana oil within Georgia state lines, according to AJC.com. The vote moving the bill forward received a 7 to 3 vote. A few changes had to be made for the votes to end in favor of the bill.

Doctors would have to report annually regarding their patients recommended for medical marijuana. The committee did, however, remove PTSD from the list of expanded conditions considered.

The extended list of conditions being considered includes:

  • AIDS/HIV
  • Autism
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Epidermolysis bullosa
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Tourette’s syndrome

Two weeks ago the Georgia Senate passed a measure allowing the addition of autism but reduces the THC concentration in marijuana oil to a 3-percent maximum. That move, however, is looked down upon by many advocates across the state.

Friday is Crossover Day in Georgia. The House has to get the bill from one side of the Capitol to the next in a single day to keep HB 65 alive.
